Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to assist with well control
   • Obtain, read and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply well control documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
   • Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activity
   • Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
2. Assist with well control activities
   • Monitor flows and returns for required volumes and rates, and report inconsistencies to driller
   • Assist in operating well control pumps according to job requirements and workplace procedures
   • Read and interpret measuring devices to monitor required operation of well control process and equipment
   • Communicate operational information to other crew members during well control operations
   • Assist in installing and maintaining equipment according to job requirements and workplace procedures
   • Participate in emergency drills and exercises
3. Monitor and report safety issues
   • Identify, address and report hazards associated with well control under varying working conditions
   • Recognise kick indicators and advise driller during well control operations
   • Identify and report ignition sources as required
   • Identify and report sources and presence of flammable gases and emissions as required
   • Identify and report running well control equipment malfunctions as required

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

assist and monitor well control operations on at least two occasions, including:

identifying flammable gases, emissions and ignition sources

assisting in installing and maintaining well control equipment

operating at least four of the following well control equipment:

mud system

blooie diverter lines

auxiliary equipment

pressure measuring devices

gas detection equipment and devices

diverters

participating in emergency drills and exercises on site.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply documentation required for assisting with well control

interpret and implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for assisting with well control, including:

interpreting gauges and graphs

recording and reporting procedures for operations and issues

work with others to assist and monitor well control operations that meet required outcomes, including:

working in teams and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions

uses a range of communication strategies and techniques to communicate information to others.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

the principles and practices of well control

key policies, procedures and established requirements for assisting and monitoring gas control operations, including those for:

work health and safety

determining risks and their controls

enacting on kick detection warnings and indications and the responses to them

sources of ignition and their dangers and controls

sources of flammable gases and emissions and their dangers and controls

pumping systems principles

the purpose, operation and interpretation of measuring and testing devices

purpose, type and conduct of emergency drills and exercises

using communication methods and protocols

drilling team roles and objectives.
